Glossary term
Debt Consolidation
Debt consolidation means combining several debts into one new loan or account, ideally with a lower interest rate and a single monthly payment. Common tools include personal loans, balance transfer cards and home equity loans. It saves money only if the new rate and fees are lower and you avoid running the old balances back up.

How Debt Consolidation works in practice
You take out new credit large enough to pay off existing debts, then repay the new loan on its own schedule. A fixed-rate installment loan also gives you a firm payoff date, which credit card minimums do not. The key numbers to compare are the new APR, any origination or transfer fees, and the term.
Say you owe $10,000 on cards at 24% and qualify for a 36-month loan at 12%. The loan payment is $332.14, and total interest is $1,957.04. Paying the same $332.14 a month on the cards would take 47 months and cost $5,459.95 in interest. Consolidating saves about $3,500 and almost a year.
Consolidation is not the same as debt settlement, and it does not reduce what you owe. Stretching debts over a longer term can lower the payment but raise total cost. Using a home as collateral turns unsecured debt into secured debt, which adds risk.
Debt Consolidation: quick questions
Does debt consolidation hurt your credit?
Applying adds a hard inquiry and a new account. Over time, lower card balances and on-time payments can help.
Is debt consolidation the same as debt settlement?
No. Consolidation refinances what you owe. Settlement tries to pay less than the full amount and can seriously damage credit.
When does consolidation not save money?
When the new rate plus fees is not meaningfully lower, or the term is much longer, or old cards get charged up again.
